I don't want to drive up to the pearly gates in a shiny sports car, wearing beautifully tailored clothes, my hair expertly coiffed, and with long perfectly manicured fingernails. I want to drive up in a station wagon that has mud on the wheels from taking the kids to scout camp. I want there to be a smudge of peanut butter on my shirt from making sandwiches for a sick neighbors children. I want to be there with a little dirt under my fingernails from helping to weed someone's garden. I want to be there with children's sticky kisses on my cheeks and the tears of a friend on my shoulder. I want the Lord to know I was really here and that I really lived.

Happy New Year? That's It?

So Happy New Year everyone! 2009! WOW! We had a fun night with our kids last night. We took them to see the movie "The Tale of Despereaux". Both Aubree and Kaden have read the book and wanted to see the movie. It was fun, except when Brennen spilled his drink, and then wanted to drink everyone else's.
When we got home my kids were determined to stay up til midnight. In the past, we have celebrated "East Coast New Year" meaning we watch the ball drop on cable and tell them it's midnite. But now my older kids can tell time, so it doesn't work anymore. Brennen went to bed when we got home at 9:30. He is two after all. Kaden made it until about 10:15, and we lost Tyson about 5 minutes later. (The only reason Tyson wanted to stay up is to drink 'special juice', sparkling cider.) Aubree was still going strong, though. About 11:30 she started to get tired, but then the Jonas Brothers came on TV, and that revitalized her.
We woke the boys up about 5 minutes til midnight. After we counted down to the new year and blew our horns and drank our special juice, Kaden said, "That's it? Happy New Year? I'm going to bed." That pretty much sums it up.
Happy New Year! Have a Great 2009.

  1. That is funny. Those things are so anti-climatic. We didn't make it 'til midnight. I put my kids to bed at 9:00 and I fell asleep shortly after. Hope you have a happy new year.
